Wellness Services

Exams

It is vital that every animal have at least a yearly wellness exam. For every one human year, our furry companions age between 7-10 years! (Imagine if we didn’t have a doctor’s checkup at least every 10 years! Boy, would we be “behind the eight-ball” at catching major illnesses that could possibly be prevented!). Don’t let Sparky fall off that cliff!

Vaccinations

Most of us do not realize just how important vaccinations are! Without vaccines, we would still be fearing such debilitating diseases as Polio and Scarlet Fever! For our pets, vaccinations help our family members avoid deadly diseases, such as Canine Distemper, Canine Parvo, Feline Distemper, Feline Leukemia, and Rabies (which we can get!). Unfortunately, many of these diseases were almost completely eliminated from the world, but, we have seen them come back with a vengeance in recent years, as many people believe vaccines are not necessary. Please make sure to vaccinate your furry loved ones!!! We would much rather see Sparky for a yearly vaccine and checkup rather than hospitalization for a deadly illness that could have been avoided.

Bloodwork

Would your doctor recommend you go for 40 or 50 years without EVER having a blood test to make sure your organs are functioning properly? Would you want to go under major surgery without making sure your body can properly process the anesthesia ahead of time? Wouldn’t you want to know right away how you can be treated, if you were deathly ill? Why would we want to “short-change” our loved ones just because they have fur? For that reason, we have state-of-the-art IN-HOUSE laboratory machines! And just in case our machines can’t test for it, we can easily send Fluffy’s samples to an outside lab for further diagnostics!

Heartworm Tests

As per the American Heartworm Society “Los Angeles County is the next area for a severe heartworm storm”. Years ago, heartworm disease did not exist in this area of the country. Unfortunately, with the relocation of the Hurricane Katrina dogs (2/3 of the dogs in the South are heartworm positive!) heartworm disease has moved into our area. Now those are neighbors we certainly don’t want! Heartworm disease is passed from dog to dog (and even to cats!) by mosquitoes. These worms will then migrate through the body, build up in the heart, and cause Congestive Heart Failure. This terrible disease can be completely avoided by placing your loved one on a medication that only needs to be taken once a month! (They even make a product now that covers your dog from flea infestation and heartworm disease for a month – IN 1 PILL!!!). So, have your loved one stop in today, give us a few drops of blood (so we can make sure he/she is negative), and start on heartworm prevention!

Feline Leukemia & Feline AIDS Tests

These diseases are no longer a “death sentence” in the feline world, much like HIV in the human world. That is why it is vital to screen for these diseases initially as kittens, and then yearly if your cat goes outdoors. This way, if Kitty does have an immune system that is already compromised, we can keep Kitty from developing a compounding problem. So, have your cat screened today!

Senior Pet Care

Wouldn’t you want your grandmother or grandfather to be around for as long as possible? Dr. Berka wants Samantha her eight-year-old Great Dane to live to 20 at least!! (the bigger the dog, the shorter the lifespan, as they age faster….but don’t remind Dr. Berka!). Thus, she makes sure her dog has annual vaccinations, bloodwork, and heartworm tests. In addition, she keeps Samantha on flea and heartworm prevention monthly.

Puppy and Kitten Care

Just like human babies need to go through a series of vaccinations to build immunity to diseases, our furry babies need to do so as well!!! It is even more important for them, as they lose Mom’s immunity from these horrid diseases 6-8 weeks after they are born (unlike humans who get much of their immune defenses from Mom while they are in the uterus!). Thus, are “furry kids” start out with a major disadvantage compared to us humans!

Dental Services

Cleaning

Most dentists recommend that we have our teeth cleaned twice a year. Since our pets age much faster than we do, it makes sense that they would need cleanings every year! Would you want 7 years of tartar on your teeth??

Anesthetic

Most of our patients will not sit still while their teeth our polished and scaled (Heck….Dr.B has trouble sitting still when SHE is at the dentist!). Therefore, most of our patients require general anesthesia in order for us to have their teeth cleaned and polished, and especially if teeth need to be extracted.

Non-Anesthetic

If your “child” is “at the head of her training class” and does not need any teeth extracted, she may be eligible for a dental cleaning without anesthesia!!

Surgical Procedures

Call for our complete offering of surgical procedures.

Spays (Ovariohysterectomies)

Not only does this procedure prevent unwanted litters, it also protects against all sorts of cancers! It completely eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer. In addition, it almost completely eliminates the possibility of breast cancer (Yes…dogs can get breast cancer, too…..and unlike humans, they have many more breasts they can get cancer in). Spays also prevent dogs from getting infected uteruses (pyometras) that can be life-threatening! With so many benefits, we often wonder why people would NOT spay their dog???

Neuters

This procedure again prevents unwanted litters , but it also eliminates the risks for prostate and testicular cancers!! There are no early detection markers for cancer in dogs (like human men have a PSA test for prostate cancer). Therefore, don’t put your dog at risk – for, by the time we find these cancers, it is often too late.

Gastropexies

This is a preventative procedure used to prevent “surgical bloat” in large breed dogs. This is a very good procedure to consider while spaying or neutering your large or giant breed dog, such as a Great Dane, Mastif, Doberman, German Shepherd, etc. (Dr. B’s world famous Samantha the Dane was “pexied” when she was spayed!)

Exploratories

Did your little friend eat a sock, rock, dog bone, string, shoe-lace, or squeakie toy that needs to come out but won’t “pass through”? Does something appear on the xray of Fluffy that just “isn’t supposed to be in there”? Our doctor would gladly help Fluffy out of this awkward situation – and you may even benefit by getting your favorite lucky underwear back out of Fluffy’s stomach!

Orthopoedics

Does Fluffy have a broken leg that needs to be plated? Does Maggie have knee caps that “pop-out”? Did Thor “overdo it” and tear his knee ligament like a football player? We offer all sorts of specialty surgeries to help your pet’s joints, ligaments, and bones!

Mass Removals

Does Lassie have a questionable lump? Does Skittles have a suspicious mass? We can easily remove them! And send them off to the lab, to make sure they are nothing to worry about.
